Regional Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC)
RTAC Overview

As a subcommittee of the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission (ARDC), the Regional Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC) advises ARDC staff regarding transportation planning processes for the Arrowhead Region of Northeast Minnesota. The committee has members representing each county in MnDOT District One, along with representatives from MnDOT, transit systems, airports, regional rail authority, tribal community, chambers of commerce, and others. Committee meetings are typically held in October, January, March, and June.

In addition to guiding transportation planning processes, the RTAC serves as the ATP's Steering Committee. In 2013, the ATP approved the merger of the RTAC and ATP Steering Committee. The purpose of this merger was to reduce the number of meetings and to ensure that meaningful meetings still occur. The merger also facilitates a regular meeting schedule for MnDOT in cases of needed action, as well as a forum for discussion and education.

Trail Planning
Recreational trails have many important benefits, both for communities and for individual users. They contribute to the quality of life, they contribute to local economies, build pride and put places “on the map”. They offer a wide range of rewards, physically, mentally and emotionally, many of which are directly transferable into both work and home environments…more.

Regional Trails in Northeast Minnesota
There are three non-motorized regional trails in NE Minnesota. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail, the Willard Munger State Trail, and the Mesabi Trail.

Mn/DOT District One
District 1 lies between Minneapolis/St. Paul and the United States/Canadian border and supports the transportation network of northeastern Minnesota, including the counties of Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Carlton, Pine, Aitkin, Itasca and Koochiching. Duluth, the location of the district headquarters, is situated at the western tip of Lake Superior and overlooks an international harbor and Lake Superior (the largest freshwater lake in the world).
