Trail Planning
Recreational trails have many important benefits, both for communities and for individual users. They contribute to the quality of life, they contribute to local economies, build pride and put places “on the map”. They offer a wide range of rewards, physically, mentally and emotionally, many of which are directly transferable into both work and home environments…more.

Regional Trails in Northeast Minnesota
There are three non-motorized regional trails in NE Minnesota. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail, the Willard Munger State Trail, and the Mesabi Trail.

Mn/DOT District One
District 1 lies between Minneapolis/St. Paul and the United States/Canadian border and supports the transportation network of northeastern Minnesota, including the counties of Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Carlton, Pine, Aitkin, Itasca and Koochiching. Duluth, the location of the district headquarters, is situated at the western tip of Lake Superior and overlooks an international harbor and Lake Superior (the largest freshwater lake in the world).
